In a rare Sunday night session, House Republicans advanced President Trump’s sweeping tax cuts package out of a key committee. However, the bill’s passage remains uncertain as conservative holdouts demand deeper cuts to Medicaid and green energy programs.

The bill, dubbed “One Big, Beautiful Bill” by the administration, aims to deliver significant tax relief to working-class Americans, bolster border security, and strengthen the military.

On Monday, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt outlined the bill’s key provisions, emphasizing its benefits for middle-class families.

“Americans who are putting in extra hours to make ends meet will see a significant reduction in their tax burden,” Leavitt stated. She highlighted that those earning between $30,000 and $80,000 annually would see a 15% tax reduction. A White House Council of Economic Advisors (CEA) study projects that the average family with two children could see a $13,000 increase in take-home pay. The CEA study also claims an average $2,000 tax cut for overtime workers.

The bill also includes provisions aimed at families, such as increasing the child tax credit to $2,500 per child, establishing optional newborn savings accounts with a $1,000 credit, and strengthening paid family leave. Additionally, it offers tax relief for seniors by allowing middle and low-income Social Security recipients to deduct an additional $4,000 in payments from their taxable income.

Leavitt warned of a potential $4 trillion tax hike if Democrats succeed in blocking the bill. “If Democrats get their way and the Trump tax cuts are not extended, Americans will face the largest tax hike in history,” she stated.

A key point of contention within the Republican Party is the bill’s approach to Medicaid. While the administration claims it protects the program for vulnerable Americans, it also includes provisions to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse.

Specifically, the bill aims to stop Medicaid funding for “barbaric gender mutilation procedures on minor children” and remove an estimated 1.4 million illegal aliens from the program. Leavitt emphasized that these measures would preserve Medicaid for “hard-working American citizens who need it.”

The bill also allocates significant funding for border security, aiming to solidify President Trump’s previous executive actions. It includes provisions for the hiring of thousands of new ICE personnel, Customs officers, and Border Patrol agents, as well as a $10,000 bonus for ICE and Border Patrol agents over the next four years.

The bill also provides funding to complete President Trump’s border wall, including constructing 701 miles of primary wall, 900 miles of river barrier, 629 miles of secondary barriers, and 141 miles of vehicle and pedestrian barriers, alongside advanced technology to secure the border.

Furthermore, the bill aims to bolster national security by increasing funding for the military, the Coast Guard, and the Air Force. It also includes provisions to modernize the nation’s air traffic control system, addressing delays at major airports.

“This historic legislation will accomplish so much,” Leavitt stated. “Americans gave Republicans a once in a generation opportunity to course correct our country, and Americans are counting on Republicans to work as hard as President Trump is in this White House.”

The bill now faces a crucial vote in the House, where Republican leadership will need to secure the support of conservative holdouts to ensure its passage.
