Jubilation has erupted in St. Peter’s Square as plumes of white smoke poured forth from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel moments ago, signaling to the world that the College of Cardinals has successfully elected a new leader for the Catholic Church.
The sight of the white smoke, a universally recognized symbol of a successful papal election, sent waves of cheers and applause through the massive crowd gathered in the square. Pilgrims and locals alike, who have been anxiously awaiting news from the closed-door conclave, embraced and celebrated the momentous occasion.

The election signifies that at least 89 of the 133 cardinal electors, sequestered within the Vatican walls, reached the required two-thirds majority to choose a successor to Pope Francis. The conclave, shrouded in secrecy and prayer, has concluded its deliberations, bringing forth the Church’s next pontiff.
The world now awaits the traditional announcement from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. A high-ranking cardinal will soon appear to utter the historic words, “Habemus papam!” – Latin for “We have a pope!” Following this declaration, the cardinal will reveal the birth name of the newly elected pontiff in Latin, before announcing the papal name he has chosen for his reign.
Shortly after the announcement, the new Pope is expected to make his first public appearance from the same loggia, where he will impart his apostolic blessing, “Urbi et Orbi” (to the city and to the world).
