Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) announced Sunday that House Democrats intend to subpoena Elon Musk if they regain control of the chamber in the 2026 midterm elections. This comes on the heels of Musk’s recent departure from a temporary advisory role within the Trump administration.
Musk served for 130 days as a special government employee in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an office established by executive order in January to identify and eliminate wasteful federal spending. DOGE reports having already saved taxpayers over $175 billion through contract, grant, and lease cancellations, with a target of reaching $1 trillion in savings.

Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, appeared alongside President Trump at a White House press conference on May 30, where both indicated ongoing collaboration. His role with DOGE officially concluded last week with the expiration of his special government employee designation.
During an appearance on MSNBC, Crockett stated that the Republican-led House blocked previous Democratic attempts to subpoena Musk.
“I think that unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait until the Democrats are in the majority—which will hopefully be in the midterms—and then we can absolutely bring Elon Musk in,” Crockett said. “We can have him under oath, and we can have him tell us about everything that he did.”
Democrats have consistently criticized Musk and DOGE’s operations. In April, leading Democrats on the House and Senate Appropriations Committees condemned Trump and Musk for freezing or blocking $430 billion in previously approved congressional funding.

A joint statement from Democratic committee leaders asserted, “Instead of investing in the American people, President Trump is ignoring our laws and ripping resources away.” The White House has defended these cuts, citing a need for greater fiscal responsibility.
President Trump has maintained that DOGE was created to bring “accountability and transparency to federal spending” and has highlighted its significant taxpayer savings. According to DOGE’s website, the average savings per taxpayer thus far amounts to approximately $1,080.
Musk has been vocal about his views on government reform. In February, he told reporters, “If it’s not possible now, it will never be possible. This is our shot. This is the best hand of cards we’re ever going to have.”

In a CBS News interview on Sunday, Musk likened the federal bureaucracy to an overgrown Department of Motor Vehicles, stating, “My frank opinion of the government is that, like, the government is just, like, the DMV that got big, okay? So, when you say it like, ‘Let’s have the government do something,’ you should think, ‘Do you want the DMV to do it?’”
