Police say a 14-year-old Florida girl was critically injured when a train struck her as she walked along train tracks in Edgewater, Florida.

Officers said the teen, later identified as 14-year-old Heleyna Showalter, was walking south along the train tracks when a train traveling in the same direction struck her.

The conductor told a 911 dispatcher that the train hit a “juvenile trespasser” Monday shortly before 4 pm.

Edgewater police say the impact threw the teen into a wooded area.

According to the AP, the girl was airlifted to a hospital in nearby Daytona Beach with injuries to her lower body.

Members of the girl’s family told FOX 35 in Orlando that they believed she was wearing earbuds and didn’t hear the train, which approached from behind in the same direction in which she was walking.

According to the AP, the girl remains in a coma Thursday.

The Edgewater Police Department is asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them at (386) 424-2000.
