An 81-year-old Florida woman is dead after calling 911 and then pulling a knife on a deputy who responded to help.

On Monday, just after 11:00 pm, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from the Rails End Mobile Home Park about a female who was in distress and having a mental episode.

She initially requested rescue personnel respond to her residence and stated, “people were dying over here” and hung up shortly after.

Due to the limited information provided by the complainant, rescue personnel staged in the area until deputy sheriffs could secure the scene.

The female was later identified as 81-year-old Janet Sours.

Deputies arrived at the scene, made contact with the complainant, Sours, and began investigating her complaint.

While deputies were talking with the complainant, trying to determine if her complaint was real or if she had a mental episode, the woman pulled a knife from behind her back and lunged at the deputy, attempting to stab him.

Investigators say the deputy took ‘evasive action’ backing up while simultaneously drawing his service weapon and firing at the woman.

Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and started performing life-saving measures on the woman.

The woman was transported to the Ocala Regional Medical Center, where she died from her injuries and was pronounced deceased at approximately 12:48 am.

Special agents with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement arrived and took over the investigation. The investigation is ongoing at this time. The suspect’s next of kin has been notified, police say.
