Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been waging a war on the liberal media worthy of the previous president.
His spokeswoman’s brawl with The Washington Post this week illustrates why.
The Washington Post on Wednesday published a story about President Joe Biden trashing Florida’s proposed “Parental Rights in Education” bill. The measure would allow parents to sue if public school teachers start sharing their sex lives and the aggressive pro-LGBT agenda with elementary school students.
DeSantis endorsed the bill, which critics dub the “Don’t Say Gay” proposal, and will likely sign it, if it gets through the Legislature.
The Post, predictably, published a story trashing the bill and DeSantis, and quoted several of the governor’s critics, including Biden, the head of an LGBT advocacy group and the spouse of gay U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
The Post did contact DeSantis’ office for a comment via email.
But as Christina Pushaw, the Republican governor’s spokeswoman noted, it was at 5:20 a.m. – not only the predawn hours but also roughly two hours before the story appeared on the Post’s website.
“Hi @Adela_Suliman! You reached out to our office for comment at 5:20 am and published your long, in-depth article at 7:44 am claiming we ‘didn’t respond to a request for comment.’ This is unethical journalism, and I demand an apology,” Pushaw tweeted on Wednesday.
Pushaw did so after she fired off the response from the governor’s office about the hit piece.
Five hours after the story was published, Suliman responded to Pushaw. She said she would update the story to include the governor’s office’s comments and explained that she was working from London – yes, that London.
Pushaw commented with a second tweet: “It’s pretty obvious you talked to progressive activist groups and wrote your entire article based on their talking points, then contacted us immediately before publication at 5:20 am (assuming we wouldn’t answer immediately at that time) so you could check that box. We see you.”
After the Post added the reply, Pushaw was not done.
“Now perhaps @washingtonpost can explain why a London reporter is writing stories about Tallahassee without taking into account our time zone,” Pushaw said in a third tweet. “Also, it’s obvious Adela wrote this whole story before contacting us.”
It’s Journalism 101 to give both sides their respective say in a story.
Yet what the Post and Suliman did is Liberal Journalism 101 – which explains once again why the public has lost faith in the mainstream media.
