After the carnage in the Middle East brought attention to the U.S. Congress, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, is not ruling out seeking the U.S. House Speaker job again.

House Republicans are anticipated to convene on Wednesday to select a new party leader.

Later that day, the earliest possible chamber-wide vote for speaker might take place, but it might not happen until the following week or later due to enduring disagreements within the GOP conference.

However, requests for emergency help to Israel from both political parties have increased the pressure.

Hamas terrorists carried out a surprise strike over the weekend that claimed the lives of hundreds of Israeli soldiers and civilians.

When asked if he would think about taking up the gavel again on Monday morning, McCarthy responded, “Look, the conference has to make that decision,” McCarthy told radio host Hugh Hewitt when asked if he would consider picking the gavel back up. “I’m still a member. I’m going to continue to fight and act. I know what it means to have a strong America and a strong relationship with Israel.”

“This is a time for strength. This is a time to stand together…this is a time for Congress to speak as one voice,” McCarthy said.

Less than six months before he was removed by a majority vote of eight members of his own party and every House Democrat, the California Republican had led a bipartisan delegation to Israel.

While members discuss and speculatively consider the precise extent of acting House Speaker Patrick McHenry’s responsibilities, House floor operations have been suspended.
