Columnist: Why Did Biden Hide His Views On Gay Marriage For 50 Years?

This week, President Joe Biden recalled again the moment he had an “epiphany” about gay marriage.

In an interview with comedian Kal Penn on “The Daily Show,” the 80-year-old president noted that came when he was a senior in high school in 1960.

“My dad was dropping me off, and I remember I am about to get out of the car and looked to my right, and two well-dressed men in suits kissed each other. And I’ll never forget it; I turned and looked at my dad. And he said: ‘Joey, it’s simple; they love each other,’” Biden told Penn.

In response, conservative columnist David Harsanyi mocked Biden over the claim. But he also asked a question few seem interested in posing to Biden: Why did it take 52 years for him to promote the cause of gay marriage?

As for the mockery, Harsanyi noted of Biden’s story: “This, of course, never happened. … Biden is a practitioner of the George Costanza school of ‘it’s not a lie if you believe it.’”

“We’re probably about a year away from Biden telling media about the time he dated a drag queen named Hedda Hair in college because his dad had told him, ‘Joey, gender is just a social construct.’”

The more relevant point, Harsanyi wrote, is that “(e)ven if he believed this story, it would only mean that Biden had spent over 50 years ignoring his dad’s progressive outlook.”

The columnist noted that in 1973, Biden opposed allowing gays to work in the federal government because they were “security risks.” In 1996, Biden voted for the Defense of Marriage Act, which declared marriage was between a man and a woman.

Biden, as of 2006, still defended that position, telling NBC News, “marriage is between a man and a woman, and states must respect that.” Two years later, when campaigning as Barack Obama’s running mate, Biden said he opposed gay marriage and that neither he nor Obama “support redefining from a civil side what constitutes marriage.”

“It is weird,” Harsanyi continued, “that the first time Biden is on the record publicly supporting gay marriage was on Meet the Press on May 4, 2012, two years after Barack Obama said his views on gay marriage were ‘evolving’ and 52 years after his alleged epiphany.”

“In truth, as with virtually every issue in his 50-year political life, Joey takes whatever position makes him popular in the Democratic Party.”
