DESOTO COUNTY, Fla. – A Florida man is behind bars again after deputies investigated a shooting on Monday.

According to investigators, DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) received a call for service regarding a shooting on SW Highway 17.

Deputies say while investigating the call for service, DCSO Patrol Deputies identified an AK-47 assault rifle as the suspected weapon and located marijuana plants in plain view on the subject’s property.

As a result, a search warrant was secured by the Narcotics Unit for the residence of Daniel Cortez III. During the search warrant, 200 rounds of ammunition, two fully loaded AK-47 magazines, and 17.41 grams of suspected methamphetamine were located, “meant to victimize the citizens of DeSoto County”.

After completion of the search warrant, deputies arrested Daniel Cortez III and charged him with three counts of Possession of Weapon – or ammunition by a convicted felon, Marijuana – producing schedule I, Marijuana – possession not more than 20 grams, two counts of Drug Equipment – possess or use, Amphetamine – traffic or methamphetamine 14 grams of over, Public Order Crimes – keep public nuisance structure for drug activity, and Drugs – possess controlled substance without prescription.

Sheriff Potter said in a social post, “DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office will not tolerate individuals selling unlawful drugs meant to victimize the citizens of DeSoto County.”
