Guns Gun Control Gun Ban

Despite Biden’s Claims, Americans Are Rejecting His Gun-Control Ideas

Liberals like to think their ideas are overwhelmingly popular, likely because they control the outlets of mass media – both for news and pop culture.

While it is dicey to rely on public opinion polls, given how often they were wrong in the Trump era, sometimes it’s worth chronicling their results.

And a pair of them show President Joe Biden’s gun control plans are really unpopular.

As violent crime spikes in major cities run by Democrats, and mass shootings have become a regular feature of American life, Biden wants law-abiding U.S. citizens to unilaterally disarm – or he’ll take guns from them.

Biden has called for a ban on “assault” weapons, a ban on high-capacity magazines, a ban on “ghost” guns, and the cinching shut of supposed “loopholes” in background checks. He intends to roll out a national version of “red flag” laws, and he has nominated a rabidly anti-gun for Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms agent to actually lead that agency.

After a mass murder-suicide that killed nine in California last week, Biden said, “Once again, I urge Congress to take immediate action and heed the call of the American people, including the vast majority of gun owners, to help end this epidemic of gun violence in America. Every life that is taken by a bullet pierces the soul of our nation. We can, and we must, do more.”

Yet the “American people” that he invokes, are taking a hard pass.

A Quinnipiac University poll from last week found that just 34 percent of those surveyed approve of Biden’s gun policies, while 49 percent disapprove.

For comparison, that same poll pegged Biden’s overall approval rating at 49 percent.

A poll released simultaneously by YouGov and The Economist offered similar results. That survey put support for Biden’s anti-gun policies at 35 percent, while 47 percent disapproved.

In that poll, Biden’s overall favorability rating was 51 percent, with 43 percent having an unfavorable view.

Clearly, Americans take a significantly dimmer view of Biden’s gun policies compared to his job performance on the whole.

Analyzing these polls at the conservative BearingArms.com, columnist Tom Knighton noted of Biden’s high disapproval scores on guns, “A lot of anti-gunners likely disapprove of Biden’s gun control efforts because they don’t think they go far enough. They’re upset that his proposals only touch on the issues they think are most important. … and think he’s not strong enough on the issue.”

But, Knighton added, “Most anti-gunners may want the president to do more, but they understand that they can’t go for everything they want in one fell swoop. They approve of Biden’s efforts.”

“That means a lot of other people are thinking Biden is going way too far with his gun control proposals, and that’s good news for the pro-gun side.”

Let’s hope he’s right.
