Florida CFO And State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis Warns Of Home Heating Fires As Temperatures Drop

With many parts of Florida expected to see near-freezing temperatures this weekend, Florida Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis is highlighting winter fire safety tips to help ensure Florida families stay warm and safe as cold air sets in.

According to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), heating is the second leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries.

CFO and State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis said, “As Florida families brace for frigid temperatures, it is important to remember that safety always comes first when heating your home with space heaters, wood-burning stoves, and fireplaces. Incorporating just a few heating safety tips can help prevent accidents and make sure your home and family are safe this winter.”

5 Winter Heating Fire Safety Tips From the NFPA

1. Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating
equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.

3. Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.

4. Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container and keep the container a safe distance away from your home.

5. Test smoke alarms at least once a month.
