The Florida Department of Education is beginning to update a rule to allow a third course in the state college system to count toward students’ required “civic literacy competency” coursework.

The college system currently has two offerings to fulfill the requirement: a history course titled “Introductory Survey Since 1877” and a course titled “American Government.”

Under the revised rule, a third course, “Introductory Survey to 1877,” also would count.

That course was added to a broader list of general education “core” courses in a rule change approved in January by the State Board of Education.

A rule development workshop is scheduled for April 2.
