Accused of manslaughter, a GameStop employee in Florida shot and killed a shoplifter who was running away with Pokémon cards, according to the police.

According to a report released by Pembroke Pines police on Wednesday, Derrick Guerrero, 33, was working at the video game retailer’s store in a suburban Fort Lauderdale strip mall on Tuesday night when a man grabbed five boxes of Pokemon Scarlet & Violet “ultra-premium” trading cards and ran toward the door.

A box of cards costs $120 retail.

According to the police, Guerrero took a pistol out of his waistband and fired one shot, striking the man in the side. After dropping the cards, the shoplifter dashed outside to a waiting pickup truck, where a woman dialed 911.

At a hospital, three hours later, he passed away.

According to the police, the shoplifter never threatened Guerrero or showed any weapons on store security cameras. The man’s identity is still unknown.

According to Florida’s “stand your ground” law, one may use lethal force to defend oneself or others from serious bodily harm or death, but not to defend property. A killing that occurs spontaneously and in the heat of the moment is called manslaughter.

Guerrero had a $25,000 bail and was being held at the Broward County Jail. His attorney is not listed in the jail records.
