Florida Gov. DeSantis Asserts Fight With Disney Is Not Over

Last week former President Donald Trump’s camp took a moment out of being the first former president to be indicted on criminal charges to mock Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The catalyst for that was the news that Walt Disney World’s pseudo-government, the Reedy Creek Improvement District, transferred authority over the theme park’s property in Orlando to the Disney company.

That occurred before the law creating the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, the board created by DeSantis and GOP lawmakers to manage Disney’s site, took effect.

The upshot seemed to be that Disney’s maneuvering neutered the new board.

On Twitter, Taylor Budowich, the head of a Trump-supporting super PAC, derided the governor, who had made his fight with Disney a key part of his re-election campaign: “President Trump wrote ‘Art of the Deal’ and brokered Middle East peace. Ron DeSantis got out-negotiated by Mickey Mouse.”

But DeSantis’ camp isn’t done.

On Saturday, The Wall Street Journal reported that the governor’s office is reviewing the agreement Disney struck with its own former governing board, and thinks problems exist.

“An initial review suggests these agreements may have significant legal infirmities that would render the contracts void as a matter of law,” the governor’s office told the Journal.

The state’s new board is has retained “multiple financial and legal firms to conduct audits and investigate Disney’s past behavior,” the governor’s statement added.

The Journal noted that DeSantis himself indicated the fight was not over, during a book-tour stop in Georgia. “There’s a lot of little back-and-forths going on now with the state taking control,” DeSantis said. “But rest assured—you ain’t seen nothing yet. There’s more to come in that regard.”

The Journal reported that state Attorney General Ashley Moody’s office sent a public records request to the Reedy Creek district for the documents covering the contract and covenants that Disney and reedy Creek negotiated in February.
