Florida Gubernatorial Candidate Charlie Crist Hits “The View” To Set His Record Straight

One problem Democrat Charlie Crist faces in trying to unseat incumbent Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis is his history of being a political chameleon.

One problem Democrat Charlie Crist faces in trying to unseat incumbent Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis is his history of being a political chameleon.

This was evident on Friday on “The View,” of all places.

Undoubtedly, the now-left-wing Crist felt he was likely in safe terrority, but he did get an honest question from the liberal panel about his past life as a Republican.

Crist was asked about a robocall he made while running for governor in 2006 as a Republican.

In the call, Crist said he wants to “set the record straight.”

He then proceeded to claim that he was pro-life, opposes amnesty for illegal immigrants, supports traditional marriage, never supported a new tax or big spending program, backs a constitutional amendment to protect traditional marriage, opposes adoption by gay couples, and championed the right to display the Ten Commandments in public places.

“Floridians need a consistent conservative governor that they can trust,” Crist said on the call.

“The View” wanted to know why he should be ‘trusted’ now.

“I changed parties because my party changed,” Crist said. Yet almost all Republicans in 2022 would support everything he favored in 2006.

When it was pointed out that his 2006 views were largely the GOP’s current platform,

Crist again insisted that the Republican Party had changed “dramatically” – and not himself, who has gone from law and order “Chain Gang” Charlie of the 1990s to a left-wing Democrat who votes with President Joe Biden 100 percent of the time.

Crist said his ideological shift came with the rise of the Tea Party movement. “I just couldn’t stomach it anymore,” he told “The View.”

He says the GOP is now “anti-minority,” even as in 2022 the party is running a record number of black candidates across the country, and as the Democrats become whiter.

After last month’s primary election, Newsweek quoted the head of a liberal voting activist group who said, “White people over 50 drove Democratic turnout in this election, and communities of color are depressed.”

Crist then said without evidence that it was more difficult for blacks and the elderly to vote, and harder to vote by mail.

Crist also proudly proclaimed his A grades from Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Rights Action League and maintained it wasn’t a big shift from being pro-life in 2006.

On one other issue, Crist showed he is solidly in the liberal camp.

Crist claimed he is a gun owner, but said as governor he would ban “assault rifles” and agreed with one of the “The View”’s house liberals that Florida’s Stand Your Ground self-defense law was “not so great.”
