Florida Man Arrested After Stealing Boat Trailer Belonging To His Local Sheriff’s Office

A Florida man was arrested Friday after he stole a boat trailer that belonged to his local sheriff’s office.

According to investigators, Jonathan Scott Sharkey, 56, of Key West, was charged with grand theft.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the boat trailer was reported missing from John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park on Jan. 21, 2024.

It was returned to its original location at the park on Jan. 25, 2024, with evidence that it had been used, deputies say

Witnesses’ statements and security video footage were collected, leading Detectives to a Key Largo residence where they found Sharkey, who promptly admitted he took the trailer and had been using it without permission but returned it when he learned it belonged to the Sheriff’s Office and the agency was investigating the theft.

Sharkley was booked into the Monroe County Jail.
