LAKELAND, Fla. – Former Senate Appropriations Chairwoman Kelli Stargel, R-Lakeland, has been hired by Florida Polytechnic University as a senior adviser for strategic relationships, the university announced Thursday.

Stargel could not seek re-election to the Senate last year and unsuccessfully ran for a congressional seat. Stargel served two terms in the House before getting elected to the Senate in 2012.

A news release said Stargel “strongly advocated” for the Lakeland university in the Legislature, including helping get more than $20 million in state money for the school’s Applied Research Center, which opened last year.

“Kelli has been a powerful supporter of Florida Poly from the very beginning, and we are honored to have her come on board,” university President Randy Avent said in a statement. “With her help and experience, we’re confident the university will increase its reputation and impact through valuable relationships across the state.”
