The autopsy ordered for George Floyd’s family found that Mr. Floyd died of asphyxiation due to neck and back compression. The Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for over 8-minutes and ignored his cries of help, the Floyd family’s attorneys said Monday.

Derek Chauvin, the Minneapolis police officer who was arrested and charged with third-degree murder Friday, after a video surfaced showing him using a knee chokehold on George Floyd and killing him on the street.

Chauvin had 17 complaints against him with nearly 20 years of his service, all but one of these complaints ended without disciplinary action, according to police records released last Thursday.

Chauvin was charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter last week.

According to the criminal complaint, officers were called after someone reported that a customer had used a counterfeit $20 bill. Officers pulled Floyd out of his car at gunpoint and placed him in handcuffs.

Floyd resisted having the handcuffs placed on him, according to the complaint. When officers tried to put him inside a police car, Floyd reportedly stiffened, fell to the ground, and told officers he was claustrophobic.
