Georgia Sheriff’s Deputy Killed When Alabama Police Vehicle Struck Him During Pursuit

Authorities confirmed that a deputy with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia was killed when an Alabama police officer’s patrol unit struck him during a vehicle pursuit that crossed the state line early Thursday.

According to the sheriff’s office, Georgia authorities pursued a stolen vehicle on I-85, extending into Chambers County, Alabama. During the chase, Deputy Eric Minix, 31, was hit by a Lanett city patrol car.

Minix was rushed to a nearby hospital after the crash, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

“Eric Minix was a dedicated deputy and K9 officer, but more importantly, he was a friend to everyone who knew him,” said the sheriff’s office. “We lost a good deputy.” We have mourned the loss of a good man. We’ve lost a dear friend.”

During a news conference Thursday afternoon, Coweta County Sheriff Lenn Wood said, “Eric, he’s like family to each and every one of us.”

At least seven law enforcement agencies were working together to apprehend the suspect, who was driving a stolen car. According to authorities, the individual was eventually apprehended and charges are pending.

“We send our heartfelt condolences to the family and department.” Please keep everyone involved in your prayers and thoughts,” Lanett police said in a statement.

Before joining the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, Minix worked for the Tyrone Police Department. According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, he is survived by his wife and three daughters.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency will conduct the investigation, and the Lannett officer has been placed on administrative leave.
