HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL. – Hillsborough County has partially activated its Emergency Operations Center in response to Tropical Storm Elsa.
This allows County and partner agencies to better coordinate resources and operations.
Hillsborough County is now under a tropical storm warning for the entire county and hurricane watch for the northwest part of the county.
Although the center of Tropical Storm Elsa is expected to remain offshore as it passes by the Tampa Bay area, tropical storm winds could begin impacting our area as soon as Tuesday afternoon.
Emergency Storm Shelter Open
Hillsborough County has opened an emergency storm shelter for residents who are concerned for their safety. The shelter is located at Riverview High School, 11311 Boyette Road in Riverview. The shelter opened at 8 a.m. this morning.
No evacuations have been called in Hillsborough County. The shelter is intended for residents who are concerned about staying in their homes during a tropical storm, such as those dependent on electricity for home medical needs or who live in homes and manufactured housing that are susceptible to storm damage.
Pets will be accepted. Pet owners must bring a sturdy carrier for each pet that allows room for the pet to stand up and move around. Also bring proof of current rabies vaccination and license for dogs and cats, and pet supplies including food, water, litter, treats, cleaning supplies, and medications, etc. The pet must arrive on a leash or in a carrier.
Wherever possible, residents should consider other alternatives to a public shelter, such as staying with friends, family, or in a hotel.

Hillsborough County offices and facilities, including parks and preserves, will close at 2 p.m. today, July 6, so that employees and customers can get home safely.
Solid waste collection will continue Tuesday but may be suspended later today depending on weather conditions.
The Apollo Beach Nature Preserve is closed today, July 6. The Balm Boyette Scrub Nature Preserve will be closing at noon today, July 6.
Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation summer camps will close early at 2 p.m. today due to potential weather conditions from Tropical Storm Elsa.
