“If I Have To Live Like This, Pull The Plug, Seriously” Lightfoot Needs To Get Her City Straight

On the evening of July 1st, 2021, Max Lewis, a rising third-year at the University of Chicago, was shot in the back of the neck by a stray bullet.

Max was shot while seated on a CTA Green Line train that he was riding on his way home from his summer internship in downtown Chicago.

The tragedy occurred while the train was stopped at the 51st Street/Washington Park Station along the Green Line.

Max was immediately rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center.  On the morning of July 4th, Max Lewis went off life support and entered the kingdom of Abraham, Moses, and King Solomon.

Max’s mom, Dr. Rebecca Rivkin, says he was paralyzed from the neck down. He communicated with them in the hospital by blinking – once for yes, twice for no. That’s how he spelled out a message on a letter board: “If I have to live like this, pull the plug, please. Seriously.”

The University of Chicago, in a statement Monday said, “The University of Chicago community is devastated by the loss of Max Solomon Lewis, an undergraduate student who has passed away from injuries related to being shot while sitting in an off-campus Chicago Transit Authority elevated train on Thursday, July 1. Our deepest sympathies are with Max’s family, friends, and all who knew him. He was a talented student and beloved individual who will be greatly missed.”

In a statement, Max’s family said, “Max was an intelligent, caring, compassionate member of the UChicago community and a dear friend to many. He is known amongst friends, peers, and classmates for his kindness, goofiness, grit, impeccable work ethic, and most importantly, his unfailingly genuine soul. He will be sorely missed.”

A GoFundMe setup for Max’s Memorial Fund has raised over $75,000 as of Wednesday afternoon.

In Chicago, the 4th of July weekend saw 97 people shot, 17 dead, under Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s watch.

This includes 2 police officers and 7 minors are among those injured in July 4th weekend gun violence
