The Biden administration has reached a deal with Iran to release five American citizens who have been detained in the country in exchange for the release of five Iranian citizens who are held in the United States.
According to the AP, the deal also includes a waiver for international banks to transfer $6 billion in frozen Iranian money from South Korea to Qatar without fear of U.S. sanctions.
The waiver is likely to draw criticism from Republicans and others who argue that it will boost the Iranian economy at a time when Iran poses a growing threat to U.S. troops and Mideast allies. However, the administration has defended the deal, saying that it is necessary to bring the American citizens home.

The five American citizens who have been detained in Iran are Siamak Namazi, Emad Shargi, Morad Tahbaz, and two others who have not been publicly identified. They have been held on various charges, including espionage and violating Iranian sanctions.
It is still unclear when the American citizens will be released. However, the administration has said that it is working to bring them home as soon as possible.
