TAMPA, Fla. – Kyle Trask has always been an underdog; Baker Mayfield comes with a lotta hype. But none of that matters now, according to Trask, who says he’s been told by head coach Todd Bowles and offensive coordinator Dave Canales, the starting job is wide open.

“I’ve just been told that it’s an open competition,” Trask said. “But at the end of the day, I know the team’s gonna do what they have to do to put whoever’s on the field that’s gonna allow our team to be the most successful.”

Mayfield comes in with a lot more experience, having thrown 100 NFL touchdowns, while Trask has only completed three passes in a regular season. But the slate is clear. No more Tom Brady and a brand-new offensive system.

Trask, when speaking to reporters after the first day of off-season workouts, said he just got to meet Mayfield. Called Mayfield a “good dude’.

“This is a good opportunity for me and a great opportunity for me to compete with someone like Baker, who’s definitely proven himself in this league,” Trask said. “So it will be very fun to get to know him and compete with him every day.”

The Florida Gators 2nd round pick by the Bucs in the 2021 draft knows he can’t get caught up in any talk outside the building. Trask is focused on making his teammates better and not turning the football over.

“I’m always trying to be as consistent as I can,” Trask said. “I’m always trying to build my routine, square it away as tight as I can.”

Trask said he learned a lot from Tom Brady, mostly about Brady’s practice routine, no matter what was going on in his life. The Florida Gator says he really likes this new system, calling it a quarterback-friendly offense.

The NFL Draft is next week, and Bucs GM Jason Licht says he would have no problem drafting a quarterback and will definitely be bringing in one or two more signal callers before training camp.
