A Minnesota State Senator has been arrested on suspicion of burglary. State Sen. Nicole Mitchell, a prominent figure in the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, was apprehended by police early Monday morning after a homeowner reported a burglary in progress.

According to police reports, officers were called to a residence in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, after a homeowner reported a burglary in progress.

The suspect, identified as Sen. Mitchell, was found inside the home and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of first-degree burglary. At this time, formal charges have not yet been filed against Mitchell.

The news of Sen. Mitchell’s arrest has elicited a range of reactions from fellow politicians.

According to CBS News, the Senate DFL Caucus, of which Mitchell is a member, issued a statement acknowledging the situation but refrained from commenting further.

State Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson, a Republican from East Grand Forks, expressed shock at the news and emphasized the expectation of high standards of conduct for legislators.

Johnson said to CBS, “As information comes out, we expect the consequences to meet the actions, both in the court of law, and in her role at the legislature.”

Before her election as a State Senator in 2022, Nicole Mitchell had an illustrious career as a TV meteorologist and a commander with the Air National Guard.

Her entry into politics was met with enthusiasm and high hopes for her ability to effect change. However, the recent arrest has cast a shadow over her promising start in the political arena.
