A 40-year-old woman from New Mexico has been arrested not once, but twice in the span of a single week, each time facing allegations of subjecting her children to unimaginable cruelty.

The details that have emerged from the case are truly horrifying, painting a picture of a mother, Yvonne Legardy, who has allegedly resorted to extreme and sadistic measures to punish her own offspring.

From forcing them to smoke cigarettes until they vomited, to dousing them with pepper spray, Legardy’s alleged actions have left many questioning the depths of her depravity and the safety of the children under her care.

According to CBS2, Yvonne Legardy’s first run-in with the law occurred on May 31, 2024, when her 14-year-old son fled their home and sought refuge at a local library.

The boy claimed that his mother had beaten him with the handle of a blue metal mop, leaving visible welts and injuries on his body that were consistent with the diameter of the mop.

According to the police report, Legardy had allegedly struck her son for failing to “properly” clean up their backyard.

When officers responded to the scene and confronted Legardy, she claimed that her son had lied about the incident, asserting that she was simply searching him for “contraband” when he ran off. However, the officers noted that the mop in question, which was found in the garage, was visibly damaged in a manner that corroborated the child’s account.

As the investigation into the initial incident progressed, authorities uncovered an even more disturbing allegation against Legardy. Court documents reveal that on May 11, 2024, the mother had discovered a vaping device in her home, which she believed belonged to one of her children. Unable to determine which child was responsible, Legardy reportedly took two of her kids into the backyard and forced them to chain-smoke cigarettes until they vomited.

The court documents further state that Legardy became enraged by the children’s retching and responded by pulling out a can of pepper spray and dousing them both. Shockingly, the authorities also alleged that Legardy had a history of using pepper spray on her children on multiple occasions, suggesting a pattern of abusive behavior.

Adding to the disturbing narrative, Legardy’s husband, Lerenzo Andre Legardy, was also arrested in March for allegedly abusing two of the children. According to the reports, Lerenzo had used an extension cord to repeatedly whip the teenagers on their legs, arms, shoulders, and head, purportedly because they were playing with the family’s Amazon “Alexa” device.

The court documents reveal that Yvonne Legardy has a long history of “going overboard” with her punishments, and that her methods have become increasingly severe since her marriage to Lerenzo. The two are said to “feed off each other,” further escalating the abuse and creating a deeply disturbing home environment for the children.

Yvonne Legardy’s alleged mistreatment of her children is not an isolated incident. Court records show that the 40-year-old mother has a lengthy criminal history, with nearly 30 counts of child abuse stemming from arrests in 2013, 2014, 2023, and 2024.

This pattern of abuse suggests that the horrific incidents recently uncovered may be just the tip of the iceberg, and that Legardy has been subjecting her children to various forms of cruelty for years.

Following her second arrest on June 6, 2024, Yvonne Legardy is currently being held in the Dona Ana County Detention Center without bond. She is scheduled to appear in court again for a preliminary examination on July 31, where the full extent of the charges against her will be determined.

The case has sparked outrage within the local community, with many expressing concerns about the well-being of the children and the need for stricter measures to protect vulnerable youth from such horrific abuse.
