Hurricane Oscar, a compact but powerful storm, is maintaining its strength as it approaches its second landfall along the northeastern coast of Cuba. Despite its small size, Oscar continues to defy expectations, with recent reconnaissance flights confirming its hurricane status.

    Current Status and Forecast Track

Oscar is currently moving west-southwestward at 7 knots and is expected to make landfall in Cuba this afternoon. The storm is then forecast to slow down and turn northward, eventually re-emerging over the southwestern Atlantic in about 36 hours. From there, it will likely be steered northeastward by a trough and ultimately absorbed by a larger weather system.

    Intensity Forecast

While Oscar is holding its own for now, the mountainous terrain of eastern Cuba is expected to disrupt its core and cause weakening. Some forecast models suggest significant weakening is possible. If Oscar survives its passage over Cuba, it is predicted to re-emerge as a tropical storm, facing unfavorable conditions for further development.

    Impacts

    • Hurricane Conditions: Hurricane conditions are expected in the southeastern Bahamas and portions of northeastern Cuba today.
    • Storm Surge: A dangerous storm surge is likely in the southeastern Bahamas, especially Great Inagua Island, and along the north shore of Cuba.
    • Heavy Rainfall: Heavy rain could lead to flash flooding and mudslides in eastern Cuba, particularly in mountainous areas. Localized flooding is also possible in the southeastern Bahamas.
