On December 13, 2021, the Austin Police Department responded to a distress call at an apartment complex on 27th Street Southwest.
The call reported an infant bleeding from the nose and unresponsive. When first responders arrived, they discovered a lifeless baby lying on the floor of the living room.
Despite their immediate efforts to revive him, the child had no pulse and was rushed to the Austin Medical Center.

The Mother’s Account
Jocelyn Leslie Pater, who had a history of substance abuse, shared her version of events with the police. She claimed to have fallen asleep on the couch with her newborn son nestled between her body and the back cushions. Pater asserted that she always woke up whenever her son moved.
However, on that fateful night, she was awakened by a friend entering her apartment in a state of panic.
The friend forcibly pulled Pater away from the baby before grabbing him and rushing to the neighboring apartment to call emergency services.
The Friend’s Testimony
The friend, identified as “T.F.” in court documents, provided her own harrowing account of the scene. T.F. had been helping Pater move but left when Pater decided to take a nap.
Upon her return, T.F. was unable to gain access to the apartment initially. When she eventually entered, she discovered Pater’s chest covering the baby’s face, causing the child to appear blue and purple.
Acting swiftly, T.F. began performing CPR while awaiting professional medical assistance.
Unveiling the Truth
During the investigation, the police secured the area and conducted a search of Pater’s apartment. Shockingly, they discovered drug paraphernalia, including a loaded syringe containing methamphetamine, three needles, a digital scale, and a meth pipe near a baby bottle.
Additionally, a subsequent search yielded approximately a gram of methamphetamine. The bottle nipple, when tested, was found to contain traces of methamphetamine.
The Mother’s Confession
Initially, Pater denied any recent drug use, claiming she had been clean since the early stages of her pregnancy. However, during a follow-up interview, she tearfully admitted to relapsing.
Pater confessed that she had been using methamphetamine daily for the past three weeks, and she expressed remorse for lying to the police. A urine analysis confirmed the presence of amphetamine and methamphetamine in her system.

Legal Ramifications
Jocelyn Leslie Pater faced charges of felony second-degree manslaughter resulting from child neglect or endangerment. In a plea deal she reached with prosecutors over a year ago, Pater agreed to plead guilty to the charges.
During the sentencing, Third Judicial District Court Judge Kevin H. Siefken decided against imprisonment and instead ordered Pater to serve five years on supervised probation. The judge also mandated 200 hours of community service as part of her sentencing.
Impact on the Child’s Health
Medical experts conducted an autopsy to determine the cause of the infant’s death. The results revealed that the child died from asphyxia due to overlay while co-sleeping with an adult.
However, it remains unclear whether the presence of methamphetamine in the baby’s system contributed to his tragic demise.
