One Charged In Saturday Sarasota Shooting

SARASOTA, Fla. – A 23-year-old man has been charged in a shooting incident that happened in Sarasota on Saturday.

Nevaun Chamberlain, 23, Sarasota County, is facing a charge of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm for a shooting that occurred in the City of Sarasota on Sunday, May 28, 2023.

Sarasota Police responded to a shooting just after 5 p.m. Saturday in the 1800 block of 34th St., near the intersection of John Rivers St.

One shooting victim was shot in the abdomen area, and their name is being protected under Marsy’s Law.

The victim took themselves to Sarasota Memorial Hospital before Sarasota Police officers arrived on the scene. The victim has since been discharged from the hospital.

Sarasota Police officers say Chamberlain stayed on the scene to speak with detectives. He is also the person who called 911 to report the crime. 

Based upon the evidence gathered in this case and after consultation with the State Attorney’s Office, detectives do not believe this qualified as a justifiable use of deadly force.

Chamberlain was arrested and faces a charge of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm. He is now out on bond.

This is an isolated incident, and there is no threat to the public. This incident is still under investigation.
