Poll: Republicans gain big ground in toss-up congressional districts won by Biden, as overwhelming numbers of voters fault “out of touch” and “condescending” Dems for economic woes

Poll: Republicans Gain Big Ground In Toss Up Districts Won By Biden, Voters Fault “Out Of Touch” And “Condescending”

The New York Times reveals that Hunter Biden’s laptop is authentic. Democrats in Congress loudly cheer as President Joe Biden announces that cops must be “funded.” Influential liberals denounce Cancel Culture and threats to free speech by ill-tempered critics.

Is this rush to the middle enough to shield Democrats from the voters’ pending wrath so they can continue to hold the reins of power this fall?

A new poll suggests no. The Democratic Party’s leftward drift is seen as irreversible, in the minds of many key voters.

This week, the National Republican Congressional Committee, which is responsible for getting GOP candidates elected to the House, released a poll that “confirms that [President] Joe Biden and Democrats face an increasingly challenging political environment.”

The poll, released Wednesday, analyzed voters in 77 “battleground” congressional districts that Biden won by 5.5 percentage points in 2020.

The overview: “Battleground voters continue to hold Democrats responsible for the negative impact that record-high inflation, soaring crime, and the crisis along our southern border are having on their lives.”

“Additionally, these voters overwhelmingly support Republicans who are focused on addressing these issues.”

The NRCC identified the following as “key takeaways” from voters in these pivotal districts:

  • Biden’s approval rating “continues to worsen,” as he is now at 40 percent, or 15 points “underwater.” The pollster uncovered a “massive disparity” between voters who “strongly” disapprove of Biden relative to those who strongly approve. With these groups, Biden is 28 points underwater;
  • Biden’s approval rating among independents has plunged 34 points since February 2021, and only 30 percent of that group approve of his job performance, while 62 percent disapprove;
  • Republicans, meanwhile, continue to expand their lead on the generic ballot. The GOP leads the generic ballot by 4 points, even though Biden won these 77 districts by over 5-plus points in 2020. The GOP’s standing on the generic ballot has improved 7 points since February 2021;
  • Overall, 75 percent of voters in these districts think Democrats are “out of touch” and “condescending” toward everyday voters;
  • The economy – including inflation and cost of living – leads the list of concerns for voters in these contested districts, and Republicans hold a “massive advantage” among such voters. “Battleground voters blame Democrats for higher prices,” the poll says. “Among those who are most concerned about the cost of living, Republicans hold a 24-point advantage on the generic ballot, and among those who are most concerned about jobs/economy, Republicans hold a 20-point advantage”;
  • Two of every three swing voters in these battleground districts believe congressional Democrats “are spending money out of control”;
  • A slight majority – 52 percent – of these voters blame Biden and Democrats for upwardly spiraling gas prices, primarily because of an “unwillingness to allow more oil and gas production in the United States.” Among them, 80 percent are more likely to back a Republican who promotes “energy innovation” that drives economic growth and reduces energy prices, while 73 percent favor boosting oil and gas production and exploration in the U.S. Just 31 percent blame the war in Ukraine and sanctions on Russian oil and gas for rising fuel prices;
  • Along those lines, three of every four battleground voters “support Republicans who are focused on addressing Democrat-created crises,” including lowering the price of groceries and gas, and stopping drug cartels from funneling drugs into America;

“This survey confirms what we already knew: Republicans have a winning economic message and Democrats’ failure to combat rising costs is repelling swing-voters heading into the midterms,” NRCC Chairman Tom Emmer told the Tallahassee-based The Capitolist in a statement.

Regarding Florida specifically, NRCC spokeswoman Camille Gallo added, “No one wants to run as a Democrat in Florida because Floridians know Democrats are to blame for their hardships.”
