Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a stark warning to the West, declaring that Russia is prepared to use nuclear weapons if its statehood, sovereignty, or independence is threatened.

Putin emphasized Russia’s readiness to use nuclear weapons since the start of the war in Ukraine.

In an interview with a state news agency Wednesday, he underlined the country’s military-technical preparedness and the importance of safeguarding Russia’s statehood, sovereignty, and independence.

“From a military-technical point of view, we are, of course, ready,” Putin, 71, told Rossiya-1 television and news agency RIA in response to a question about whether the country was ready for a nuclear war.

Despite his strong stance on nuclear readiness, Putin expressed hope that the United States and other Western powers would refrain from actions that could trigger a nuclear conflict. He described U.S. President Joe Biden as a veteran politician who understands the potential dangers of escalation.

Putin said the United States understood that if American troops were deployed on Russian territory or in Ukraine, Russia would regard the move as an intervention.

Putin said that Biden is a “representative of the traditional political school, and this is confirmed. There, besides Biden and others, there are enough specialists in the field of Russian-American relations and in the field of strategic restraint. Therefore, I don’t think that everything here is rushing to it (nuclear war), but we are ready for this.”

The backdrop of Putin’s warning is the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, which began in February 2022 when Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine.

This conflict has resulted in significant casualties and destruction in both countries. Territorial disputes, political tensions, and allegations of human rights abuses have characterized the war.
