U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz continues his crusade against awful gun bills advocated by Democrats.
In his latest sparring with congressional leftists, Gaetz denounced a measure that he labeled the worst in a batch of “preposterous” anti-gun legislation: a revived ban on military-style semiautomatic weapons.
The House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday discussed the Democrats’ latest gun-control bill, HR 1808. The bill specifically identifies at least 195 individual firearms as “semiautomatic assault weapons” and would make it illegal to “import, sell, manufacture, transfer, or possess” any of them. The text of the measure says its purpose is “to regulate assault weapons” and “to ensure that the right to keep and bear arms is not unlimited.”
The liberals define as “assault weapons” any gun that does not have a fixed magazine and features any one of the following: a pistol grip; a forward grip; a folding, telescoping, or detachable stock; a grenade launcher; a barrel shroud; a threaded barrel.
Democrats want to outlaw all models of AK and AR rifles as well as several models of popular pistols and even shotguns.

The committee’s Democratic chairman, Rep. Jerry Nadler, claimed Democrats are not trying to take guns because guns already in circulation would be grandfathered in under the bill.
Gaetz, a Fort Walton Beach Republican, wasn’t buying it. He noted that Democrats rejected an amendment that would have allowed active-duty troops and military veterans to have any of the guns on the hit list.
Gaetz argued such an amendment was especially necessary on the Mexican border.
If President Joe Biden is willing to turn the southern border into America’s “dangerous turnstile,” he said at the hearing, then “the least we could do is not disarm the people who have to deal with that catastrophic influx of violence.”
Since Democrats have been in power under Biden, Gaetz continued, America has become “poorer, dirtier, and less safe. There’s no dispute about that. And having done that to our country, they want to disarm law-abiding Americans.”
The congressman noted that Democrats rushed headlong into gun control after the Uvalde, Texas, massacre without waiting for more details – which, Gaetz added, have now shown that the murders could have been prevented by an adequate response from local law enforcement.
But now, Gaetz argued, “they are coming for your guns. They’re listing them out in this extensive legislation, to show people what they ought to be afraid of,”
“There’s nothing to fear from Americans who are lawfully and responsibly using firearms,” Gaetz added at the hearing.
In an email to his constituents on Friday, Gaetz said he would be a definite no if the bill comes to the House floor.
“Any Republican or Democrat who votes for this unconstitutional bill is betraying their oath to uphold the Constitution and should be forced to pay for it at the ballot box,” he added.
