Rep. Matt Gaetz may be against most of America’s overseas military adventures, but during a House Armed Services Committee hearing on Wednesday, the Fort Walton Beach Republican proposed a resolution authorizing President Joe Biden the use of military force to “take out” the Chinese military assets that are taking root in Cuba.

“To all of my hawk friends on the committee who think I am too much of a dove, this amendment is an authorization to use military force, given to President Biden to take out the Chinese assets in Cuba,” Gaetz said during the hearing.

Gaetz argued that part of China’s increasing coziness with Russia has allowed the Chinese communist government to take control of former Soviet assets in Cuba, and improve them.

“Whereas we really didn’t care too much about the Russians having 1960s technology 90 miles south of Florida, we are increasingly concerned —and should be a lot more concerned — that China right now is functionally turning Cuba into a stationary aircraft carrier off the coast of Florida,” said Gaetz.

Gaetz added that his proposal was not offered to “spark or provoke war,” but it might be necessary to prevent war later on.

Gaetz also invoked the Monroe Doctrine, lamenting that the declaration by President James Monroe that warned foreign interests about meddling in America’s sphere of influence to “atrophy.”

As The Free Press has reported recently, China is negotiating with Cuba to establish a listening post on Cuba. This emerged just a few months after China floated a spy balloon over most of the U.S. heartland, presumably to gather intelligence about military bases.
