After Rep. Kevin McCarthy was forced out of office, Republicans nominated Rep. Steve Scalise on Wednesday to be the new speaker of the House.

However, they now need to try to bring their sharply split majority together in order to elect the conservative on the floor.

By a narrow margin, Scalise defeated Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, in secret balloting at the Capitol.

Some people view the congressman from Louisiana, who is fighting blood cancer, as a hero for having escaped a gunman’s rampage on lawmakers during a congressional baseball practice in 2017.

“We have a lot of work to do,” Scalise said afterward.

A floor vote by the whole House could come as soon as Wednesday afternoon.
