Some Democratic Mayors Spend Big On Security As They Defund Cops And Restrict Guns

COVID-19 helped expose Democrats whose mantra is rules are for thee and not for me.

But violence in the streets of some major American cities is revelatory in its own right.

The pro-Second Amendment website BearingArms.com reported on four cities that doled out millions of taxpayer dollars for security details for left-wing, soft-on-crime, defund-the-police politicians.

For example, last year Baltimore spent $3.6 million for 14 cops to protect Mayor Brendon Scott, State Attorney Marilyn Mosby, and Police Commissioner Michael Harrison. Yet, Baltimore cut $22 million from its police budget.

New York City refuses to say how much it costs to provide security for Mayor Bill de Blasio, but the NYPD spent at least $360,000 to protect de Blasio during his brief, failed run for the presidency in 2020.

According to the report, Gotham City slashed $1 billion from the $6 billion police budget this year, and redirected $354 million to social services. De Blasio, meanwhile, has an NYPD detail, as do his wife and son.

In San Francisco, taxpayers spent $12.4 million between 2015 and 2020 to protect Mayor London Breed, even as city officials pledged to cut $120 million from cops in favor of spending on health programs and workforce training.

The cost of the mayor’s police security detail jumped almost $1 million over that time, from $1.7 million in 2015 to $2.6 million last year.

Finally, over that same time in Chicago, citizens paid $17.3 million to guard unidentified city officials. Yet Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who claimed she’s against defunding police, allowed 400 police officers positions to be axed from the department in 2020.

In 2015, Chicago provided top city officials, including presumably the mayor, 16 officers at a cost of $2.7 million. Last year, those numbers climbed to 22 officers and $3.4 million, a record high.

As BearingArms.com noted, “The hypocrisy displayed by these mayors is nothing new, but given the rise in crime and the calls from these mayors to both strip millions from police budgets and impose new restrictions on legal gun owners, it’s still important to call them out.”

“These mayors have demonstrated that they don’t have a problem with guns as self-defense tools, at least when it comes to their own safety. When it comes to you protecting yourself and your family with a firearm, on the other hand, these mayors would prefer you disarmed and defenseless.”
