On Saturday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) edged Trump in a straw poll taken at the Western Conservative Summit in Denver.
In-person and online attendees were asked to vote for all the potential candidates they approve of for the 2024 run for the White House.
Trump and DeSantis were neck-and-neck at the top after voting, with DeSantis coming in at 74.12% and Trump at 71.43%. The third-place went to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) at 42.86% and former Vice President Mike Pence finished 10th with 21.5%.
DeSantis also finished second to Trump in a 2024 straw poll conducted at the Conservative Political Action Conference in February of this year.
Trump has said in the past, if he does make another bid for the White House, he’d consider DeSantis as a potential running mate.
In Tampa on Friday, former Trump advisor and long-time conservative political consultant Roger Stone said at a press conference, that if Donald Trump elects not to run in 2024, he would like to see General Michael Flynn jump into the race.
“I’ve written about and suggested that we try to draft General Michael Flynn. Now, I know General Flynn we have the shared experience of being framed in a DC courtroom. We’ve got to be good friends through that crucible of fire. I don’t think he’s a politician. I don’t think he’s currently planning to run for political office. But either was Dwight. Eisenhower. I hope that if President Trump, was very clearly my first choice, decided not to run, that a draft can be enacted for General Flynn,” said Stone.
Stone added that if General Flynn elected not to run, Florida Governor DeSantis would be the choice.
“Some of you may have heard we have a Governor here in Florida named DeSantis. Who could be the finest governor we have ever had. And we’ve had some great governors,” said Stone.
