Former President Donald Trump surrendered on charges related to his alleged involvement in scheming to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia.

Trump’s surrender led to a brief booking process, including the taking of a mug shot, which is a historic occurrence involving a former American president.

He was subsequently released on a $200,000 bond and is flying back to New Jersey.

Prior to boarding his airplane, Trump stopped to speak with reporters saying, “Very sad day for America. This should never happen when you challenge an election, you should be able to challenge an election. I thought the election was a rigged election, the stolen election. And I should have every right to do that.”

“As you know, you have many people that you’ve been watching over the years, do the same thing,” Trump said. “Whether it’s Hillary Clinton or Stacy Abrams or many others, when you have that great freedom to challenge, you have to be able to, otherwise you can have very dishonest elections. What has taken place here is a travesty of justice. We did nothing wrong. I did nothing wrong and everybody knows that.”

On Thursday, Trump changed his lead attorney to Steve Sadow, an Atlanta defense attorney who previously represented Usher and Rick Ross, ahead of the surrender at the Fulton County Jail.

Steve Sadow filed paperwork to appear as lead counsel in Fulton County Superior Court Thursday morning, replacing Drew Findling, according to Politico.

Sadow said Trump is “innocent of all the charges brought against him” and “should never have been indicted,” according to CNN.

“We look forward to the case being dismissed or, if necessary, an unbiased, open minded jury finding the president not guilty,” Sadow said in a statement, according to CNN. “Prosecutions intended to advance or serve the ambitions and careers of political opponents of the president have no place in our justice system.”
