Former President Donald Trump on Sunday mourned a former member of his administration who was gunned down last week during a carjacking in Washington, D.C.

Mike Gill, 56, who served as the chief of staff for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission during Trump’s administration, died in a hospital on Saturday, several days after being shot as his car was stolen.

Gill was waiting to pick up his wife near Mount Vernon Square in Washington around 5:45 p.m. last Monday when the gunman, Artell Cunningham, jumped into his car and shot him.

Gill staggered from the car and collapsed. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.

Meanwhile, Cunningham continued his crime spree over two days.

He carjacked and fatally shot another man, Alberto Vasquez Jr., 35, in Northeast Washington and was suspected of carjacking two more victims in suburban Maryland.

During the manhunt, Cunningham shot at a D.C. police officer and a Maryland state trooper before police in suburban Prince George’s County shot and killed him during an armed confrontation on Tuesday. As of Sunday, police still had no motive for Cunningham’s crime rampage.

“Wonderful and brilliant Mike Gill, a highly respected member of the Trump Administration, was ruthlessly and viciously shot in the head during a carjacking in Washington, D.C.,” Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Sunday morning.

“He was a SPECIAL PERSON – His family and friends are devastated. The Federal Government must take over D.C. God bless Michael and his family.”

Gill was survived by his wife and three children.

Fox News reported on Sunday that carjackings were up 98% in Washington in 2023, a record-setting year for that particular crime.

Victims reported 958 carjackings last year, while 484 were reported in 2022.

Fox News also noted that 274 murders were committed in Washington in 2023, the highest number since 2003.

Many conservatives attribute DC’s skyrocketing violent crime rate to the soft-on-crime policies of Mayor Muriel Bowser, a staunch Black Lives Matter advocate, the CD City Council, and the Biden administration.
