Former President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he would like to debate Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex and wife of Prince Harry of the United Kingdom.
Trump, who is the leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, has often mocked Markle and Harry’s abandonment of their royal duties and dispute with the British royal family. When asked by conservative commentator Hugh Hewitt about a possible appearance with Markle and Harry, who openly support left-wing political causes, Trump said that he would “love to debate her.”
“If you want to set it up, let’s set it up. Let’s go do something. I’ll, I’d love to debate her. I would love it. I disagree so much,” Trump said of a possible appearance, suggesting that Hewitt organize it. Trump had been asked by Hewitt whether he would “do that for the ratings,” to match a tennis game known as the “Battle of the Sexes” between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King in 1973, which was watched by 90 million people.

Trump also criticized Markle in his remarks for her attitude toward the Royal Family, in particular the late Queen Elizabeth II. “I didn’t like the way she dealt with the Queen. I became very friendly with the Queen. She was an incredible woman … but they treated her with great disrespect, and I didn’t like it.”
Markle and Harry moved to Montecito, California, in June 2020 after a high-profile dispute with the Royal Family, where Harry accused his father, now King Charles III, and the British tabloid press of neglecting his interests and harassing his wife.
The couple left the royal household and began accusing the royal family of bad behavior across multiple platforms, the most notable being an interview with Oprah Winfrey and in Harry’s memoir, “Spare.”
The couple has also made left-wing public statements in favor of abortion, such as calling the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade a “global assault on democracy and freedom.”
“I didn’t like the idea that they were getting U.S. security when they came over here,” Trump added. Harry, while a working representative of the British monarch, received a U.S. government security detail when visiting the United States, though he and Markle now pay for private security in California.
“That would get ratings, wouldn’t it?” Hewitt suggested.
Buckingham Palace and the office of the Duke of Sussex did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
