Trump: “We Have To Have That” Swap In GOP Senate Leadership After McConnell’s Freeze

A large part of former President Donald Trump’s legacy from his time in the White House could be attributed to Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who rammed dozens of Trump’s judicial picks through the Senate over staunch Democratic opposition.

But now Trump says it’s time for the Kentucky Republican to go.

In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News that was published Sunday, Trump said McConnell’s questionable health indicates the GOP needs new leadership in the Senate.

The issue arose after the 81-year-old McConnell froze for about 20 seconds during a press conference last week. Other GOP senators had to aid McConnell from the event.

McConnell later returned and said he was “fine,” according to the Associated Press.

But as the AP noted, “In March, McConnell suffered a concussion and a broken rib after falling and hitting his head after a dinner event at a hotel. He didn’t return to the Senate for almost six weeks. He has been using a wheelchair in the airport while commuting back and forth to Kentucky. And his speech has recently sounded more halting.”

In 2019, McConnell, first elected to the Senate in 1984, fractured his shoulder after tripping and falling while working on a treadmill at home.

Breitbart noted that McConnell, who has led the GOP in the Senate since 2007, fell at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport a few weeks before the freezing incident. He apparently was not injured at that time.

Trump told Breitbart that he thought McConnell’s freezing episode was “sad,” but even sadder was his effort to enable Democratic President Joe Biden and Senate Democrats.

“I thought it was sad,” Trump said of McConnell’s incident.

“At the same time, I think it’s a shame he went so far out to give Green New Deal money to Biden and Democrats.”

“He got ten people to vote because they needed ten people, and he got ten people to vote on numerous occasions for trillions of dollars. I think that’s a shame. But that was too bad. That was a sad thing to see,” Trump added.

“He had a bad fall, I guess, and probably an after-effect of that. But it was also sad that he gave trillions and trillions and trillions of dollars to the Democrats to waste on the Green New Deal, destroying our oceans and destroying our great, beautiful vistas and plains all over our country with windmills that are very expensive energy. So that’s a very sad thing also.”

When asked if McConnell should step aside, Trump replied, “We have to have that.”

“No, we have to have that [a new leader]. We have some people in the Senate that are fantastic and would be great at that position,” Trump added.

When asked who should replace McConnell, Trump demurred.

He told Breitbart that he has “a lot of great relationships” in the Senate.

Breitbart noted that 10 Republican senators have already endorsed Trump to be the GOP nominee.

Neither of Florida’s GOP senators, Sens. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott are among them.
