Two Florida Spring Breakers Remain In Critical Condition After Overdosing On Fentanyl-Laced Cocaine

Two Florida spring breakers remain in critical condition after overdosing on fentanyl-laced cocaine. At least two U.S. Military Academy, West Point cadets are among the six spring breakers who overdosed Thursday night in Wilton Manors, Florida, while on spring break.

One of the cadets is on the West Point football team, according to the academy, which is located in Orange County, New York.

“The U.S. Military Academy is aware of the situation involving West Point cadets, which occurred Thursday night in Wilton Manors, FL,” a West Point statement said.

Wilton Manors police said late Friday they had made an arrest in the case in conjunction with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, but did not give any specifics.

Miami ABC affiliate WPLG reported the cadets were part of a group of college students from New York state at a short-term rental home where cocaine laced with fentanyl caused seven people to overdose.

“It was quickly identified that this was an overdose situation with multiple individuals,” Fort Lauderdale Fire Department Battalion Chief Stephen Gollan told WPLG. “Narcan was deployed as quickly as possible.”

Two of the six were in critical condition, rescue and emergency officials said. A West Point official said one of the cadets hospitalized was an army football player. The official said another football player was not hospitalized.

The Fort Lauderdale fire-rescue battalion chief Steve Gollan said two critically ill victims were on ventilators, two other victims were in stable condition, one was in good condition and one was released.

Gollan said that after two victims collapsed on Thursday, two others became ill while trying to give them CPR, from the residue of the drugs on their bodies.

When paramedics arrived, six people at the home needed treatment. Gollan said the opioid-overdose-reversing drug naloxone was administered. Neighbors told local media the home was a vacation property, often rented out.

West Point public affairs said that no more details are available at this time, and the incident is under investigation.
