U.S. Sen. Rick Scott said he agreed with President Joe Biden on one thing after over a dozen U.S. service members were slaughtered in a terrorist attack in Kabul:
The tragedy is all Biden’s fault.
During his address Thursday afternoon, one of the rare occasions recently when Biden has been willing to take reporters’ questions after delivering his remarks, Biden said he bore the responsibility for the chaotic events “of late” that have unfolded in the nearly two weeks since he ordered the troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.
“I bear responsibility for, fundamentally, all that’s happened of late. But here’s the deal: You know — I wish you’d one day say these things — you know as well as I do that the former President made a deal with the Taliban that he would get all American forces out of Afghanistan by May 1,” Biden said.
“In return, the commitment was made — and that was a year before — in return, he was given a commitment that the Taliban would continue to attack others, but would not attack any American forces.”
“The reason why there were no attacks on Americans, as you said, from the date until I came into office, was because the commitment was made by President Trump: “I will be out by May 1st. In the meantime, you agree not to attack any Americans,’” he added. “That was the deal. That’s why no American was attacked.”
Biden’s comments did not explain why Americans were not targeted after May 1 when, in mid-April, he extended the departure timeline negotiated by former President Donald Trump’s administration to Sept. 11.
Four months ago, the Taliban pledged to attack U.S. and NATO forces if the original target date were not kept.
On Thursday, Scott, a Florida Republican, unloaded on Biden.
“One thing I agree with President Biden on: He bears total responsibility for the #AfghanistanCrisis and the tragic loss of life in Kabul today. His failure has cost American lives,” Scott tweeted.
The tragedy we’ve witnessed in Kabul today was predictable and preventable,” Scott continued. “This loss leaves me and countless other Americans furious and heartbroken. There was no reason that 12 American families needed to lose a son or daughter, husband or wife, dad or mom, or sibling today.”
“But that is what President Biden’s unmitigated failure in Afghanistan has caused – the needless loss of American life. The deaths of these brave service members fall on President Biden. … His inexplicable lack of a strategic plan to successfully and safely evacuate Americans and our allies must be answered for.”
