The United Auto Workers (UAW) announced that it would be expanding its strike actions by walking out of 38 General Motors and Stellantis facilities in 20 states.

This expansion of strikes primarily targeted distribution centers rather than production plants. It’s important to note that the ongoing strikes at Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis plants would continue as planned.

According to UAW President Shawn Fain, Ford was spared additional strikes because the company had met some of the union’s demands during negotiations over the past week.

This suggests that there were ongoing labor negotiations between the UAW and these automakers, with some progress made with Ford but not with General Motors and Stellantis, leading to the expansion of strikes at their facilities.

The UAW is demanding a 36% wage increase over four years, a 32-hour work week for 40 hours of pay, and a restoration of traditional pension plans for newer workers. The companies have offered a little over half of the wage increase and have rejected the other demands.

The companies argue that they can’t afford to meet the union’s demands because they need to invest profits in the transition to electric vehicles.

However, the union points to the companies’ huge recent profits as evidence that they can afford to pay their workers more and improve their working conditions.
