The U.S. death toll from COVID-19 is not only slowing. It’s going backward.
On Wednesday the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reduced the coronavirus death count by more than 72,000.
That included a reduction in pediatric deaths of more than 400.
According to the CDC, the algorithm “over-counted” COVID-related deaths by a total of 72,277 across 26 states.
That was about 7.5 percent of the overall death count, which now hovers near 969,000, according to the website. Among child deaths, the total dropped by 24 percent.
The CDC attributed the overcount to a “coding logic error.”
Last week, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky talked about the agency’s “Data Modernization Initiative.” JustTheNews.com described it as “a plan to make the CDC’s data more accurate.”
“The efforts come following months of demands from lawmakers and members of the media for more truthful COVID reporting from the government health agency,” the website added.
“To this day, the CDC’s COVID death count does not establish a clear difference between individuals who died as a result of COVID-19, and those who died with COVID-19,” JustTheNews.com pointed out.
“A more specific differentiating standard between the two distinct types of death could lead to a further downward revision of the country’s COVID death count.”
The CDC’s correction comes not only as the rolling seven-day average death rate drops to the range it was at Thanksgiving, but also as Dr. Anthony Fauci and other public health officials are warning that the new BA.2 omicron variant could be more transmissible than omicron, although they hedge by saying it’s unclear how lethal it could be.
