Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis apparently isn’t done with Disney yet.
Last week, Disney got a jump on the upcoming Gay Pride Month by unveiling a lineup of “pride”-themed clothing called the “Disney Pride Collection,” according to Breitbart News.
“The merchandise, which is geared for both children and adults, features rainbow-themed motifs imposed on familiar Disney brands, including Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar. Some items feature slogans including ‘Belong, Believe, Be Proud,’” Breitbart added.
Disney plans to donate all profits from sales of the “Disney Pride Collection” through June 30 to “groups that support ‘LGBTQIA+ youth and families.’”
As one example, Breitbart noted that a “Star Wars Pride Collection Spirit Jersey for Kids” retails for $54.99, while a “Marvel Pride Collection T-Shirt for Kids” fetches $19.99.
Yet on Tuesday, Breitbart revisited the issue, noting that the “Pride Collection” features items made in China, “which continues to regard homosexuality as a mental disorder and recently announced a crackdown on ‘sissy’ men in entertainment.”
Breitbart added, “China decriminalized homosexuality in 1997, but the Communist Party still looks unfavorably upon gay people and significantly restricts displays of alleged ‘homosexual’ or ‘effeminate’ behavior. Communist leaders announced in September a ban on ‘sissy’ or ‘girlie’ men in entertainment in an effort to promote masculinity among the country’s young men.”
Chinese President Xi Jinping also has aligned his nation with the Taliban in Afghanistan, who routinely “persecute LGBT people and women and girls generally, subjecting the former to torture, imprisonment, and even execution.”
On Wednesday, Breitbart reported that DeSantis, a Republican, slammed Disney for such hypocrisy.
“It’s hypocritical, but it’s not surprising, that a woke company like Disney would threaten the rights of parents in Florida but would happily do business with the Chinese Communist Party – one of the world’s worst human rights abusers,” a DeSantis campaign spokesperson told Breitbart.
The governor himself also has criticized Disney for its relationship, after the company vigorously denounced DeSantis and GOP lawmakers for enacting the Parental Rights in Education law, which as of July 1 bans school districts and classroom teachers from implementing lesson plans featuring sexual orientation or gender identity in grades K-3.
“You have companies like a Disney that are going to say and criticize parents’ rights — they’re going to criticize the fact that we don’t want transgenderism in kindergarten and first-grade classrooms,” he said at a press conference in March.
“If that’s the hill they’re going to die on, then how do they possibly explain lining their pockets with their relationship with the Communist Party of China?” DeSantis continued.
“Because that’s what they do, and they make a fortune, and they don’t say a word about the really brutal practices that you see over there at the hands of the CCP.”
DeSantis added, “If we would’ve put in the bill that you were not allowed to have curriculum that discussed the oppression of the Uyghurs in China, Disney would have endorsed that in a second — and that’s the hypocrisy of this.”
