TAMPA, Fla. – The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a DUI investigation after a man caused a head-on collision while suspected of driving under the influence.

On Sunday, March 24, 2024, at 9:25 p.m., deputies responded to a crash near Columbus Drive and Regional Water Lane in Tampa.

The crash occurred after Linton Robertson, 73, drove his vehicle the wrong way down the eastbound lanes. He then struck another vehicle head-on, totaling both vehicles.

Robertson and the other driver sustained injuries and were transported to Tampa General Hospital. Once at the hospital, signs of impairment were observed.

Deputies say Robertson is a multi-time DUI offender and previously had a BAC over .2. Charges will be forthcoming for this crash following the findings of a blood sample submitted to FDLE.

“There is no excuse for driving under the influence and putting others’ lives at risk,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “The consequences of impaired driving can be life-altering, and we will not tolerate anyone who threatens the safety of our residents.”

In addition to this incident, the HCSO DUI squad made 31 impaired driving arrests over the weekend.

“I am so proud of the work our DUI squad does every day to keep our streets in Hillsborough County safe,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “They made 31 crucial arrests over the weekend, ensuring that those who choose to endanger lives through driving under the influence are held accountable.”
