Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) is among nearly three dozen Republicans who demand to know why the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority removed complimentary parking spots for volunteers assisting with Honor Flight groups.

The Sarasota Republican highlighted the letter in an email to constituents on Sunday.

“What the airport has done is unAmerican!” Steube wrote. “Only in the DC Swamp would something like this happen.”

“My jaw hit the floor when I heard of this situation,” he added on Twitter.

According to the letter lawmakers sent to the CEO and board chairman of the MWAA last week, prior to the pandemic members of Veterans Service Organizations were allowed to park at Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington to help facilitate Honor Flight arrivals and the safe transport to their destinations.

Honor Flights are sponsored by groups across the country to bring aging veterans to the nation’s capital to see the monuments and memorials that were built to commemorate their service.

Yet the “fee-free” parking spots for the volunteers have now been removed, the lawmakers noted.

“Having these volunteers, who are familiar with both the airport operations and geography, is vital to safety and wellbeing of all arriving/departing veterans being honored, as timing is critical to ensure the veterans visit the memorials and monuments,” the lawmakers noted.

“Not to mention, it’s the least we can do as a Grateful Nation.”

They wanted an explanation for the decision to remove the parking spots and to share whether there is a plan to reinstate them.

“It goes without saying that the decision to remove fee-free parking for the small group of VSO volunteers chaperoning Honor Flights is distressing, mind boggling, and frankly un-American,” the lawmakers added.

Besides Steube, the Florida lawmakers who signed the letter included Rep. Cory Mills, Anna Paulina Luna, Michael Waltz, and Daniel Webster.
