Lakeland Police Chief Ruben Garcia and Police Investigators gave a count of events in the horrific and shocking murder of Henderson’s that happened on Wednesday.

The suspect, 36-year-old Marcell Waldon, was arrested at the Relax Inn Motel on Lakeland Hills Blvd., Wednesday night, around 6 PM, and is said to have no relation or dealings with the Henderson’s. Investigators said the couple was stabbed to death in their home by Waldon.

During the press conference, investigators said, “We think that it was a random act. We don’t, as far as we know, have not been able to locate any relation between him and the victims. There may in fact be a relationship that we’re able to to determine down the road, but we do not at this point in the investigation have any reason or any reason to believe that he knew either one of the victims at all.”

Investigators say that the victims were stabbed to death and that Waldon took items from the home.

Edith Henderson, formerly Edith Yates, served as a Lakeland City Commissioner from 2006 until the beginning of 2018, and the couple purchased the Terrace hotel in August of 2019.

We will be following this story and updating this as the investigation continues.
