The final three counties in Florida, Miami-Dade, Broward, and Alachua have ended mandatory in-school masking following a prolonged legal battle between school districts and the state.

In Pasco County Schools Masks To Be Optional After May 28

PASCO COUNTY, FL. – Pasco County district’s requirement that students, staff, and visitors wear masks on school campuses and district offices will expire at the close of business on Friday, May 28. That’s the last day of school for teachers.

After May 28, masks will be optional.

“We will encourage the wearing of masks or face coverings – especially in gatherings of large groups – and we will encourage safe social distancing. But masks will no longer be required,” said the district in a statement.

What does this mean, especially in the short term?

  • Masks will be optional at our graduations that occur after May 28, where graduates will be accompanied by family members and social distancing will be observed. We would encourage attendees to bring a mask to the ceremony, as we expect crowds will gather in the concession area.
  • Masks will be optional for students and staff participating in our Extended School Year program.
  • Though it’s impossible to predict the future, in planning for next school year, we fully expect masks will be optional in the fall as well.
