Nevada state lawmaker Heidi Kasama has announced her bid for the 2024 congressional election in a swing district currently held by Democratic Rep. Susie Lee. Kasama, a twice-elected state representative.

She will join three other Republicans in their efforts to unseat Lee, who is seeking her fourth term in Congress.

Kasama’s campaign platform emphasizes bipartisan, common-sense policies focused on education, the economy, and public safety.

Kasama, a realtor and former accountant, is driven by her commitment to helping Nevadans achieve the American Dream. Her parents are immigrants from Norway, and her husband is a Japanese immigrant. She aims to make opportunities available for everyone in her district.

“Today we see more crime, higher living expenses, and uncontrolled health care costs. Students are graduating with a lack of basic education and are unprepared to enter the workforce,” Kasama said in a statement. “There is a basic lack of accountability and personal responsibility. This is not the American way of life I grew up with. I will fight hard to change the direction of our country for the sake of my grandchildren and all Nevadans.”

The 3rd Congressional District seat is one of the targeted races for the National Republican Congressional Committee in 2024. The district has been held by Lee, who secured her second term in 2020, winning by a narrow margin of three points. The district’s potential to flip from blue to red makes it a crucial battleground for both parties in the upcoming election.

“What motivates me the most to run for Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District is to do my part in helping Nevadans achieve their own American Dream,” Kasama said in a statement. “Throughout my career, I have never been afraid to roll up my sleeves and work across the aisle to produce real results for the people of Nevada. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same about Susie Lee, who is a reliable vote for Joe Biden’s failed agenda of inflation, taxes, and government overreach. Nevadans deserve better.”

The Republican primary will feature several contenders, including Elizabeth Helgelien, Steve London, and Drew Johnson.

Nevada’s political landscape is of particular interest due to its history of narrow victories and its role as a swing state in recent presidential elections. The race will be closely watched as it unfolds in the lead-up to the 2024 election.
