Cesar “Echy” Echaverry, 29, a five-year veteran of the Miami-Dade Police Department, had been shot in the head Monday night. Police Director Alfredo Ramirez announced his passing Wednesday night.

“Officer Echaverry died in the line of duty while serving & protecting our community,” Ramirez said in a series of tweets. “Our law enforcement family will continue to stand beside & support the Echaverry family through this difficult time. We’ll never forget Officer Echaverry’s bravery & sacrifice. Godspeed, brother.”

“We are heartbroken over the loss of Miami-Dade Police Department Officer Cesar “Echy” Echaverry, who has died after being shot in the line of duty Monday night while trying to apprehend a robbery suspect,” said Collier County Sheriff’s Office

“Officer Echaverry will be remembered as a hero who died while selflessly protecting the community he served,” Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said. “We extend our condolences to his family and our colleagues with the Miami-Dade Police Department.”

Echaverry was a member of Miami-Dade Police’s Robbery Intervention Detail
